Archilochus 180, 181, 196A.1-13

80: "a spark of fire in it"

181: very fragmentary. the most intelligible bit is "a path swiftly through the sky turning snatching wings"

196A:

"holding off... enduring equally... but if you're in a hurry, there is a lovely, delicate girl at our house who's very eager. I think her form is faultless. Make her your friend."

I responded, "Daughter of the good, late Amphimedo, young men have many pleasures of the goddess besides the divine use."

180, 181: very fragmentary, very boring. The intelligible bit reminds me of gods travelling in the sky in epic & hymns. Like the Archilochus here:

κέ]λ̣ε̣υθον ὠκέως δι’ αἰθέρος [    (10)

λαιψηρὰ κυ]κ̣λ̣ώ̣σας πτερά

is a bit like hAp 67 (ὕψι μετὰ νέφεσιν ῥίμφα πρήσσουσα κέλευθον.), or the hymn to the Dioscouroi 33.13 (ξουθῇσι πτερύγεσσι δι’ αἰθέρος ἀΐξαντες). Vaguely epic-ish language used in the animal story.

196A is, of course, much sexier and much more interesting. A few thoughts:

  • The girl and the guy are doing some real flirting with this exchange. She appears to be telling him to wait (so she is willing, to some degree?). And her suggestion of her sister is I think kinda flirtatious? Like she doesn't really object to sex with the guy, if she's suggesting her sister?
    • I feel like there's some kind of displacement there, where if you're interested in someone but feel like you can't accept for whatever reason, you suggest to them someone like you.
  • Both interlocutors are playing with language of the natural world, and in particular the brevity of life. The sister is τέρεινα, like flowers and leaves, which wilt; and the dead mother is held by "moldering earth" (γῆ... ἐὐρώεσσ᾽). Presumably there is an implicit argument of enjoying what you have before it's gone; maybe explicit next time.
  • The speeches follow Homeric conventions where speech begins and ends at line boundaries (i.e. not in the middle of the line).
